UTK Announces All-Steinway

June 13, 2011 – KNOXVILLE (UTK & Steinway)

It’s been said that a musician is only as good as his or her instrument. The University of Tennessee, Knoxville’s School of Music is working to provide its students with the finest pianos in the industry made by Steinway & Sons. The goal to raise more than $3.5 million to become an All-Steinway School was announced Monday during an on-campus event with university and Steinway representatives, along with donors and friends of the university.

“Becoming an All-Steinway School is an important goal for the university,” said Chancellor Jimmy G. Cheek. “Achieving this goal will transform our recruiting efforts for students and will enrich the music facilities throughout our campus. Access to these beautiful instruments will allow our students to fully realize their artistic talents.”

To receive All-Steinway School status, at least 90 percent of an institution’s pianos must be a Steinway or other brand owned by the parent company. The university must purchase a minimum of sixty-one pianos including upright pianos and concert grand pianos from six to nine feet in length.

To date, more than $840,000 has been raised which has funded one Steinway Hamburg nine-foot concert grand piano and three Steinway Hamburg seven-foot grand pianos.

“The product of our school is our students,” said Jim Powell, a UT alumnus and supporter of the Steinway initiative. “With the investment of these pianos, we will have more and more of these talented kids,” he said, referring to two School of Music students who performed during the Steinway announcement.

“Partnering with a company like Steinway opens doors for our students that otherwise might not be possible,” said Angela Batey, interim director for the School of Music. “Becoming an All-Steinway School places UT’s School of Music in a position to offer our students the very best training and learning experiences.”

The pianos will fill the new Natalie L. Haslam Music Center scheduled for completion in 2013. Two Steinways also will replace pianos in the Carolyn P. Brown Memorial University Center. Steinway & Sons will work with UT to manage instrument inventory and create a customized service plan for care of the pianos.

Internationally, more than 120 universities, conservatories, and schools are classified as All-Steinway Schools, including the Oberlin Conservatory, the Cincinnati Conservatory, and the Cleveland Institute. Several Southeastern Conference schools bear the classification as well as several Tennessee colleges.

The Natalie L. Haslam Music Center will be a 123,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility that will include the 400-seat Sandra G. Powell Recital Hall, music library, dedicated rehearsal facilities for band, choral, opera, and orchestra programs, computer labs, a recording studio, forty performance studios/offices, and a variety of technology-enhanced practice and rehearsal rooms.

In 2006, Natalie and Jim Haslam, co-chairs for the Campaign for Tennessee, and the Haslam Family Foundation gave the University of Tennessee $32.5 million. The largest allotment of this money, $10 million, went to the UT School of Music, which dedicated the funds for the construction of a new facility.

To find out more about supporting UT’s All-Steinway School Initiative, contact Cathy Dodge at 865-974-2365 or Susan Hyde at 865-974-3156.

Pellissippi’s Press Release about Steinways

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE                                                                                                                                                            May 24, 2011

Pellissippi State first community college in Tennessee to achieve
‘All Steinway School’ status

Ten Steinway pianos were carefully unloaded on May 5 and set in their predetermined places at Pellissippi State Community College. With that delivery, the academic institution became the first community college in the state to achieve designation as an All Steinway School.

The instruments joined three other pianos from world-renowned Steinway and Sons that were already delivered to Pellissippi State. Now the college’s Music program can boast 13 Steinway pianos in its studios, practice rooms and performance venues.

Of the 10 Steinways placed most recently, three are grand pianos and seven are uprights. The latest delivery brings the school’s total to four Steinway grands and nine upright models.

The 158-year-old Steinway and Sons company is known for its meticulous construction of grand pianos, in particular. Each of the grands has 12,000 parts and takes one full year to craft by hand. Those at Pellissippi State feature a satin ebony finish, and both the grands and the uprights include an artist’s bench.

A fundraising campaign is currently under way by the Pellissippi State Foundation to bring Steinways to the college’s Music program, and the most recent delivery is a major milestone toward the campaign’s goal.

The Foundation kicked off the All Steinway School campaign in 2010 in order to elevate the Music program to world-class status. Pellissippi State is not only the first All Steinway community college in Tennessee, but it is also the fourth All Steinway community college in the nation and one of only about 120 All Steinway colleges and universities in the world.

The All Steinway School campaign continues, and individuals interested in participating are asked to call the Pellissippi State Foundation at (865) 694-6529 or visit www.pstcc.edu/steinway.

Pellissippi State reaches All-Steinway Goal!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

PELLISSIPPI STATE COMMUNITY COLLEGE REACHES ITS GOAL TO BECOME AN ALL-STEINWAY SCHOOL

Knoxville, TN – May 3, 2011 –  On April 27, 2011, President Dr. Allen Edwards, along with Music Program Coordinator Dr. Bill Brewer and Steinway representative Brandon Herrenbruck made the historic announcement that Pellissippi State Community College had reached its goal of becoming an All-Steinway School – Tennessee’s first community college to earn this distinction.

“As an All-Steinway School, we will build prestige, enhance student and faculty recruitment, and create a legacy of excellence in music education for future generations,” said Music Program Coordinator, Dr. Bill Brewer.

The new pianos arrive on Thursday, May 5 at 1:00pm following a yearlong campaign. Beginning in 2010, the Pellissippi State Foundation sought to elevate the Music program at Pellissippi State Community College to world-class status by raising $600,000 for the placement of 13 Steinway pianos in studios, practice rooms and performance venues.

All-Steinway Schools demonstrate a commitment to excellence by providing their students and faculties with the best equipment possible for the study of music. That is why the only pianos owned by Pellissippi State Community College – from the practice room to the recital hall – are designed by Steinway & Sons.

Pellissippi State is committed to providing the best quality education for its students  - which starts with enabling students to practice and perform on the world’s finest pianos. Incomparable sound and performance make Steinway the piano of choice for schools committed to providing the very best for their students. The enduring quality of Steinway pianos underscores the wisdom of the College’s investment.  Students will choose to invest their talents at Pellissippi State Community College, because this school has invested in them.
