  Student Recital

Dr David Northington has been a professor of music at UT-Knoxville since 1977. He holds a Doctor of Musical Arts from Yale School of Music
“We are very fortunate to have right here in Knoxville such an esteemed member of the international piano community as David Northington.

Northington has performed across the United States and the world to critical acclaim and accolades. The New York Times has described him as “an immensely gifted musician…who combines the technical mastery of a virtuoso with the musical sensitivity of a poet.” When not performing, Northington has taught on the faculties of several universities.

He currently holds the position of Professor of Piano at the University of Tennessee School of Music. His many teaching awards include the Tennessee Music Teachers Association’s Teacher of the Year Award and the Tennessee Governor’s School of the Arts “Outstanding Teacher Award.” Dr. Northington has also been the recipient of the Tennessee Arts Commission’s Artist of the Year Award and “In 2010 Northington was awarded the National Artist Award for the Triennium of the Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society”.

Biographies:

Dr. Joseph Akins (pronounced “Ache-inns”) lives a dual life as both a piano artist and a college professor. To date, he has released four solo albums, A Piano Christmas (2011), Spirit Touch (2009), Masterpeace (2007), and Keys to the Heart (1997). In 1989, Joseph earned a Bachelor’s degree in Music from the University of Tennessee after studying jazz for four years with Jerry Coker. He went on to earn a Master’s degree at Radford University and a Doctorate from Tennessee State. In 2000, he began a teaching position at Middle Tennessee State University where he has earned tenure and multiple outstanding teaching awards.

Also, Joseph has been touring the United States as a performing artist often sharing the stage with venerable pianists such as David Lanz, Liz Story and David Nevue. His heartfelt playing is often compared to these similar artists, but the blending of his southern roots and jazz background has created a distinct sound of his own.

Michael Dulin is a native of Brookside, Alabama. From the age of two, it was apparent that he had an exceptional gift for music. After attending Alabama School of Fine Arts, he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance at Birmingham-Southern College, where he was twice awarded the Alys Robinson Stephens Piano Prize. He completed his musical studies at The Juilliard School in New York, working with master teacher and concert pianist Adele Marcus.

He was a finalist in the Carnegie Hall International Piano Competition, and was awarded the Silver Medal in the Second Annual International Audio-Video Competition in New York. In addition to performing his original music throughout the United States, Michael appears both solo and with orchestra in performances of classical music. He has also toured as keyboardist with the legendary Motown group, the Temptations.

Carson-Newman Student Showcase

Carson-Newman College presents a showcase performance of some of its finest music majors at Knoxville’s American Piano Gallery on Tuesday, November 8 at 7:00pm. The program will include a variety of both solo and collaborative music and will feature 3 pianists, 4 vocalists, and 2 instrumentalists.

In the past year, the Music Department at Carson-Newman received a generous donation that was used to purchase 14 new Steinway & Boston pianos and to rebuild 4 others for enhanced teaching, performance, and practice. With the recent deliveries of new pianos from the American Piano Gallery, our students have been enjoying the benefits of this exciting investment.

Carson-Newman College is a private, four-year, Christian, coeducational liberal arts college of approximately 2,100 students. Founded in 1851, it is affiliated with the Baptist denomination. The campus is nestled in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains, between two lakes, and is located on the highest point in Jefferson City, Tennessee. Carson-Newman was recently ranked among the nation’s best liberal arts colleges by U.S. News and World Report. The music department currently has 10 full-time faculty and approximately 90 music majors. Music majors may earn Bachelor of Music degrees in performance, church music, music education, music theory, or music with an outside field.
