Carolyn Craig is a junior at West High School, where she is pursuing an international baccalaureate diploma. She began studying piano with Fay Adams eight years ago and currently studies with Fay Adams and David Brunell, both of whom are on the faculty at UT. Carolyn was the first place winner of the Tennessee Music Teachers’ Association (TMTA) Junior Piano Performance competition in both 2009 and 2010 and the TMTA Senior Piano Performance competition in 2012. Advancing to the Music Teachers’ National Association (MTNA) Southern Division competition, she received Honorable Mention the first year and was named Alternate the second year. She was the keyboard winner of the Knoxville Choral Society’s Young Classical Musicians competition in 2011. As a concerto competition winner, she performed the Allegro from Mozart’s Piano Concerto in A Major, K. 414 with the Oak Ridge Youth Symphony Orchestra (2010) and the Presto from the Mendelssohn Piano Concerto No. 1 in G minor, op. 25 with the Maryville College Community Orchestra (2011). She performed in Carnegie’s Weill Recital Hall in 2011 as a 1st place winner in the American Protégé International Talent Competition. In October of 2011, she received the S.K. Ballal award in the Young Artists Competition at Tennessee Tech University. In 2012 she was the silver medal winner at the Nashville Steinway International Piano Competition. Carolyn also studies organ with Emeritus Prof. John Brock.

At West High, Carolyn is a member of the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta math honor society, Mock Trial team, and the German Club. She has also been active in musical theater at West, as Levi’s wife in West High’s production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Miss Dorothy Brown, Millie’s best friend, in West’s production of Thoroughly Modern Millie. Carolyn attended the Governor’s School for the Sciences last summer and is currently in the Medical Explorations program at the UT Graduate School of Medicine. She is a junior volunteer at the UT Medical Center in the Cancer Institute.

ABOUT JOSEPH AKINS

Living in greater Nashville, Dr. Joseph Akins is an active pianist/composer and associate professor at Middle Tennessee State University. As a pianist/composer, he has released four solo albums. “A Piano Christmas” (2011) was nominated as Best Holiday Album of the Year at SoloPiano.com, and “Spirit Touch” (2009) was included in the Top 40 Solo Piano Albums of the Decade for 2000 2009 at MainlyPiano.com. As a professor at MTSU, Joseph teaches courses in MIDI, musicianship and new media. Before launching his solo piano career and starting at MTSU around 2000, he earned music degrees in jazz piano and electronic music from the University of Tennessee and Radford University. He also performed with many jazz, rock and country bands as a keyboard player. In 2006, he earned a doctorate from Tennessee State University.

Michael was born in Edmonton, Alberta Canada but now resides in Austin, TX. His debut contemporary instrumental piano CD, “Coming Into View,” was released on November 1, 2008. Nearly 20 years after his ears first caught the notes of the emerging contemporary instrumental piano scene, Michael is arriving with his own brand of improvisational, deeply melodic music. His pre-released music can already be heard underscoring a number of films and television shows, and has garnered him nominations at the Los Angeles Music Awards and Unisong International Songwriting contests. His most recent release, “Time”, has been nominated for Whisperings album of the year and has been entered in the Top 20 for 2012 at MainlyPiano.com.

Steinway Society of Knoxville presents Carson-Newman College, a showcase performance of some of its finest music majors at Knoxville’s American Piano Gallery on Sunday, February 10th at 3:00pm. The program will include a variety of both solo and collaborative music

The Music Department at Carson-Newman received a generous donation that was used to purchase 14 new Steinway & Boston pianos and to rebuild 4 others for enhanced teaching, performance, and practice. With the recent deliveries of new pianos from the American Piano Gallery, our students have been enjoying the benefits of this exciting investment.

Carson-Newman College is a private, four-year, Christian, coeducational liberal arts college of approximately 2,100 students. Founded in 1851, it is affiliated with the Baptist denomination. The campus is nestled in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains, between two lakes, and is located on the highest point in Jefferson City, Tennessee. Carson-Newman was recently ranked among the nation’s best liberal arts colleges by U.S. News and World Report. The music department currently has 10 full-time faculty and approximately 90 music majors. Music majors may earn Bachelor of Music degrees in performance, church music, music education, music theory, or music with an outside field.

The Evelyn Miller Young Pianist Series

The Evelyn Miller Young Pianist Series holds three concerts every year, one each on the fourth Sunday of January, February, and March.

Each performance features an up-and-coming concert pianist 35 years of age or younger.

The concerts are held at the Clayton Center for the Arts on the Campus of Maryville College at 2:30 in the afternoon.

This season showcases three outstanding artists:

On Sunday, January 27, 2013, Steven Lin will be performing. Mr. Lin moved from Taiwan to the United States in 1999. He won the 2004 Nordmann Piano Scholarship Competition and received a full scholarship to the Julliard Pre-College Division. He then went on in 2007 to win a full scholarship to the College Division of the Julliard School, and is now a masters candidate there. He was a soloist at age thirteen with the Orlando Symphony Orchestra under the baton of George Manahan. In 2012 Mr. Lin won Third Prize in both the Hilton Head International Piano competition and the William KapelI International Piano Competition.

Vivian Choi will be featured on Sunday, February 24, 2013. Ms. Choi was born in Seoul, Korea. She graduated summa com laude form Russia’s Saint Petersburg State Conservatory, then received a Masters of Music with Academic Honors and Graduate Diploma in Piano Performance from the New England Conservatory. Her debut recording in 2010, comprising works of Rachmaninoff, Prokofiewv, and Godowsky was releasedon the St.Petersburg Musical archives Northern Flowers label.

The March 24, 2013, program will spotlight Jin Uk Kim, who made his debut with the New Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra at the age of ten.In 2009 he was featured in the New England Conservatory Young Stars Concert at the Newport Music Festival. He has earned the third prize at the Corpus Christi International Competition for Piano and Strings. A recipient of the Joseph C. Beaudoin Piano Scholarship, Mr. Kim is currentoly prusuing a doctoral degree at New England Conservatory under the tutelage of Wha Kyung Byun.

Rachmaninoff Remembered-2/17

The year 2013 marks the seventieth anniversary of the final public performance of Sergei Rachmaninoff, a towering figure of late nineteenth and early twentieth century music. Knoxville and the University of Tennessee share an intriguing connection with the maestro’s final days, as his last concert was held in the Alumni Gymnasium on the campus of the University on February 17, 1943. To commemorate this momentous occasion,The Evelyn Miller Young Pianist Series, in partnership with the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, College of Fine Arts, School of Music, will present at eight in the evening on February 17, 2013–the seventieth anniversary of the Rachmaninoff recital–a gala event featuring acclaimed Russian pianist Evgheny Brakhman in solo performance of an all-Rachmaninoff program in the Cox Auditorium, Alumni Hall on the UT campus–the very same building where Rachmaninoff played. The anniversary event is capturing widespread interest, and promises to be memorable. Thanks to underwriting by a small group of generous donors, the program will be free and open to the public.

________ __ ___________Pianists from East Tennessee State University (ETSU) will present a concert of solo piano music from Bach to Rzwewski.

Located in a beautiful part of Appalachian Mountains, ETSU piano program offers opportunities for students to learn and grow into outstanding performers and pedagogues. ETSU is an “All Steinway School” where students practice and perform on Steinway grand pianos.

ETSU piano students have the opportunity to earn a degree in Piano Performance or Music Education. In addition to weekly lessons by the outstanding piano faculty Benjamin Caton, Chih-Long Hu, and JerilynPaolini, all piano students meet weekly to perform in studio class, and are encouraged to perform in concerts and competitions. Each semester a student performs at least five times in studio class, master class, solo and chamber concert settings. Many students have garnered top prizes from local, state, and international competitions. Many of our students have continued their education at schools such as the Juilliard School, Manhattan School of Music, Eastman School of Music, Florida State University, Cincinnati Conservatory of Music and Ohio State University. In addition, students also have an opportunity to focus in music education and obtain a teachingcertificate, enabling them to teach in public schools.

ETSU has an exciting concert series featuring internationally famed guest artists. Students are given the opportunity to attend many concerts and be instructed in master classes by Arthur Greene (Gina Bachauer Competition winner), Alexander Kobrin (Van Cliburn, Gold medalist), Antonnio Pompa-Baldi (Van Cliburn, Silver Medalist), Valentina Lisitsa (concert pianists), Chu-Fang Huang (Cleveland, Winner), Ju Jin (Tchaikovsky, Bronze medalist), and many other top musicians.

The ETSU Music Department offers many scholarship opportunities for students to pursue degrees in piano, including the Public Performance Scholarships, Academic Performance Scholarships, and Powell Steinway Scholarships. The majority of ETSU piano students receive scholarships that cover 70-80% of the tuition costs, while the most outstanding students are awarded scholarships that cover tuition in full. Scholarship auditions are held annually in February.
